Teaching nonfiction reading skills is so much easier when students are actually interested in what they’re reading — and earthquakes? They are always a hit.
This no-prep resource gives your students a focused, engaging look at earthquakes through a nonfiction passage paired with comprehension questions, vocabulary practice, and a sequencing activity. Everything is ready to print and hand out, so there’s no prep work on your end.
WHAT YOU WILL GET:
- Nonfiction reading passage about earthquakes
- Comprehension questions
- Vocabulary worksheet
- Sequencing activity
- Answer keys
Nonfiction Passage:
The one-page article covers what earthquakes are, what causes them, how they develop, the damage they can cause, and how scientists are working to predict tsunamis.
Comprehension Questions:
There are 13 questions based directly on the passage. The 10 multiple-choice questions and 3 open-response questions target skills like finding the main idea and supporting details, recognizing cause and effect, drawing conclusions, identifying text structure, and using context clues. A grading scale is included at the bottom of the page so you can check answers and assign a grade quickly.
Vocabulary Worksheet:
The vocabulary page uses words pulled directly from the passage and gives students three different ways to work with them. They match words to definitions, match words to synonyms, and complete cloze sentences using a word bank. It’s a straightforward way to reinforce the academic vocabulary from the text.
Sequencing Activity:
This activity includes 6 illustrations showing the steps that lead up to an earthquake. Students use what they learned from the passage to put the illustrations in the correct order. It’s a nice way to check whether students understood the process, not just the facts.
This set works well for whole-class practice, small group instruction, literacy centers, homework, or as a reading assessment. Because everything is printable and ready to go, it’s a low-effort way to fit nonfiction reading and vocabulary work into your week without a lot of planning. It’s a good fit for elementary classrooms, homeschool settings, and tutoring sessions alike.
