Description

The first days of school are hectic, and finding something your students can actually work on independently while you handle all the back-to-school logistics is harder than it sounds.

This set of back to school ABC order cut and paste worksheets gives students a hands-on alphabetizing activity they can dig into on their own. They cut out school-themed words and glue them back into the boxes in alphabetical order — simple enough for independent work, but genuinely useful for building real dictionary and alphabetizing skills.

WHAT YOU WILL GET:

  • On the Bus ABC Order worksheet
  • Classroom ABC Order worksheet
  • Lunchroom ABC Order worksheet
  • Recess ABC Order worksheet
  • School Supplies ABC Order worksheet
  • Places Around School ABC Order worksheet
  • Answer keys for all worksheets

Each worksheet follows the same format: students cut out a set of back-to-school themed words and arrange them in alphabetical order before gluing them into the boxes. Words are alphabetized to the first letter, and sometimes the second, so there is a little built-in challenge without it being overwhelming. Being able to physically move the words around before committing to gluing them down makes this a more concrete, manageable way to practice a skill that can feel abstract when it is just pencil-and-paper.

The school-themed vocabulary across all six worksheets also makes this a natural fit for English language learners who are still getting familiar with everyday school words. Your ELL students get exposure to that vocabulary in context while practicing the same alphabetizing skill as everyone else.

Because there is no prep involved beyond printing, these work well as morning work, literacy center activities, or something to hand fast finishers while you are still getting through first-day routines. You can set students up with a worksheet and a pair of scissors and trust that they know what to do — which is exactly what you need when you are trying to take attendance, sort through paperwork, and remember seventeen names all at once.
