Description
This hard and soft C and G word sort resource gives your 1st and 2nd graders hands-on practice distinguishing between all four sounds — hard C, soft C, hard G, and soft G — through sorting activities, anchor chart posters, and a two-player game.
The sorting cards each feature a picture with the word printed underneath, and the target letter is highlighted in red so students know exactly where to focus. It covers all four sounds in one complete set, so you’re not piecing together materials from different places.
WHAT YOU WILL GET:
- Hard and soft C and G anchor chart posters
- 48 word sort cards (12 per sound)
- Heading cards for each sound
- Recording sheets
- Tic-tac-toe game worksheet
WORD SORT CARDS:
There are 48 sorting cards total — 12 for each of the four sounds (hard C, soft C, hard G, soft G). Each card shows a picture and the word, with the target letter highlighted in red. Students read the words and sort them by the sound the highlighted letter makes. The heading cards keep each sort organized and labeled.
TIC-TAC-TOE GAME:
This is a two-player game that uses the word cards. Students take turns drawing a card, reading the word, and saying the sound the red letter makes, then placing the card on the game board. First player to get three in a row wins. It works well as a partner activity during literacy centers or as extra practice once the sorting is done.
RECORDING SHEETS:
Recording sheets are included so students can write down their sorts and you have something to collect and check. They work well as a quick accountability piece during center time or as a follow-up to the hands-on sorting.
This resource works well for word work centers, small group phonics instruction, or speech and language therapy. The anchor chart posters give students a reference point while they work, and the recording sheets make it easy to see who’s got the concept and who needs more support. It also works for tutors or homeschool families working through phonics at this level.
