CVC Words Phonics Games

These NO PREP kindergarten phonics games make it so easy to give your students lots of practice reading, writing, and spelling CVC words and sight words!

There are 5 different activities that require nothing more than a paper clip or dice. Just print and use to start building sight word and CVC fluency!

Spin, Write, Color

To play, students spin a CVC word, use the word to complete a sentence, and then color the corresponding picture.

Example:

Student spins the word “van”.

  • Student chooses the sentence ”I see a green _____”

  • Student writes the word “van” in the space.

  • Student finds the picture of the van and colors it green.

Includes 5 different game board worksheets with 4 sentences and 4 pictures on each.

Spin, Write, Draw

This activity is similar to the previous set, but slightly more difficult because students draw what they spin instead of just color the picture.

Example:

  • Student spins “hat”

  • Student chooses a sentence and writes the word in the space: A hat is on the bed.

  • Student finds the picture of the bed and draws a hat on it.

This set includes 5 boards with 4 sentences and pictures on each.

Roll and Read

This is a 2-player game. Players take turns rolling dice and reading short sentences with CVC words and sight words. They color a happy face each time they read a sentence. The player who “captures” the most sets wins.

Includes 3 different game board worksheets.

Spin and Spell

This activity focuses on decoding real and nonsense CVC words. Students also get to practice writing short, basic sentences.

Each worksheet has 10 incomplete CVC words. There are empty boxes where the consonants should be. Students spin a letter to build words.

  • Student spins a letter and writes in an empty space.

  • After spinning and filling in all the spaces, the student reads the words created and puts a check mark next to the real words.

  • The student chooses one of the real words they made to use in a short sentence.

Includes 3 different worksheets.

CVC Tic Tac Toe

This game focuses on medial vowel sounds while decoding CVC words and discerning between real and nonsense words.

To play:

  • Students take turns rolling the dice to choose a vowel.

  • The student uses the vowel they rolled to complete a word on the tic-tac-toe board.

  • If the word is real, they put an X or O in the space.

  • Players keep taking turns until someone gets 3 in a row.

There are 3 worksheets with different tic-tac-toe boards.

If you’re looking for an easy way to get your kindergarten students to practice decoding while having fun, you will love these cvc phonics games! Just print and start playing!
