Phoneme Substitution Activities
This phonemic awareness resource focuses on phoneme manipulation and substitution of initial, medial, and final letter sounds. It is a valuable tool for reading intervention or speech language therapy, but can also be used in the general education classroom with beginning readers.
How to Use This Phoneme Substitution Resource
These are verbal-auditory activities (but can be adapted) for use in small groups or one-on-one.
• Students say the name of each picture aloud, focusing on the target phoneme (either the beginning, middle, or ending sound).
• Next, substitute that phoneme with a new one as indicated on the card.
• Say the new word formed and place the corresponding picture card in the space.
What is included?
There are 4 cards for initial sound substitution, 4 for medial, and 4 for final. These activities use only CVC words.
Includes:
• 12 Phoneme Substitution Cards
• 36 Picture Cards
• Answer Keys
CAN I USE THIS FOR CENTERS OR INDEPENDENT PRACTICE?
Yes! Although these are meant to be auditory-verbal activities, they can be adapted for students who do not need adult support and have developed phonemic awareness skills. They would complete the activities in the same way, saying the words to themselves or a partner, rather than out loud to the teacher.
To use in this manner, I suggest supplying students with a small set of cards at once – either the initial, medial, or final sound cards. Once they are successful with sound manipulation in one position, they can try working with a set of mixed cards.
