Unknown Start Word Problems
Do your first graders struggle to understand word problems? Do they know when to add or subtract? This set of task cards focuses specifically on addition and subtraction problems when the starting number is unknown. This tricky skill can be especially challenging for young learners.
Each task card includes a single, easy-to-read word problem involving addition or subtraction within 20. The starting quantity is unknown, with the change (number to be added or subtracted) and the result (sum or difference) given. These are open-response questions, not multiple choice.

There are two different recording sheets. The first one instructs students to choose 4 cards and use the space provided to show their work. This version is perfect to use in math centers or for fast finishers.
The second sheet has space for students to write their answers for all 20 cards. This version is great for scoot or a walk the room activity when you want students to work through the entire set.
I like to use task cards in guided math groups. Give each student a card to work on and then have them share their solution and reasoning with the group. This will give you an opportunity to reteach or address misunderstandings if needed.
