If you teach young children, you know how important it is to make learning hands-on, colorful, and fun. This is especially important as they’re learning the letters of the alphabet. Whether you’re a parent helping your child at home or a teacher preparing lessons in pre-k or kindergarten, having a good set of alphabet flash cards can make all the difference.
Today I have a set of free printable alphabet flash cards for you! They are perfect for introducing both uppercase letters and lowercase letters. Each card features a picture of an item that begins with that letter, making it easy for early learners to connect the first letter of a word with its sound.
Little kids love repetition and alphabet flashcards are a fun way to give them that! I’ve found that even my most wiggly students stay engaged when we turn the flashcards into games or hands-on ABC activities.
Here are some great ways to use them:
Write the alphabet across your whiteboard (or lay letter cards across the floor). Hide your flash cards around the room and send kids to hunt for them. When a student finds one of your hidden cards, they bring it up and place it with the matching letter on your alphabet line. This builds letter recognition and visual discrimination.
Lay out a few cards and say a word, like “ball” or “dog.” Ask your child to find the card with the letter that matches the sound the word starts with. It’s a simple way to build early phonics and phonemic awareness skills.
Have your students sort the cards into piles of capital letters and lower case letters. Or designate one side of the room for upper case and the other side for lower case. Then, pass out a card to each student. When you say go, have them quickly dash to the side of the room that matches their card.
Use the flashcards as a bright and cheerful bulletin board display. You can hang them in ABC order like an alphabet line, display just your focus letter of the week, or use them as headings for a word wall.
Laminate the cards and put them in your literacy stations with dry-erase markers for students to practice tracing. Or let them roll out pieces of playdough to form the letters. It’s a great way to build hand-eye coordination!
These free printable alphabet flash cards come as a ready-to-print PDF file. You’ll get a separate card for each letter from A through Z.
The first set includes:
A card for each alphabet letter
Large uppercase letter and lowercase letter
A colorful picture that starts with the letter sound
There’s also an additional set of ABC cards with just the letters (no picture). These are great to use for learning to match upper and lowercase letters.
All of the cards are sized just right for little hands, and the colorful pictures print beautifully on card stock. For best results, I suggest laminating them so they hold up for years of classroom use by little learners.
And the best part? They’re completely free for personal use (non-commercial use). You can download your free printable alphabet flash cards right now, no strings attached! Just enter your name and personal email address below and I’ll send the PDF files straight to your inbox!
Your students will learn to recognize and name letters and their sounds while tracing, writing, coloring, cutting, and pasting.
Each letter is in its own file packed with printable activities for both upper- and lowercase letters. You’ll have nothing to plan – just print and go! Perfect for morning work, early finishers, or daily practice.
This bundle has everything I need to teach my kinders their letters and letter sounds. It's been great for helping my lower kids get caught up to the rest of the class. They look forward to the activities each day.

I teach non-English speakers who are new to our school. They need a lot of extra support and these activities are perfect for them. So clear and easy to understand. I love that I don't have to prep anything. Saved me a ton of time
