What Doesn't Belong? is a set of categorizing and category elimination tasks and worksheets perfect for speech-language, SPED, ELLs, and vocabulary development. Students will view sets of objects, determine what they have in common or the category they belong to, and find the one item that doesn't fit with the others.

TASK CARDS

These are full-color cards that can be used in small-group, in centers, or for one-on-one intervention or assessment. Each card includes four pictures. Three of them go together in some way. Students must figure out how the objects go together and which one doesn't belong. There are 21 different tasks that vary in difficulty. Provided in both printable PDF and digital format in Easel.

WORKSHEETS

This is a set of activities your students can do for independent practice or assessment. There are five different worksheets that get progressively harder. Students cut out the pictures and glue them onto a chart to show which ones go together and which one doesn't belong (the "oddball" item). They must also identify the target category by completing a cloze sentence at the bottom (can be done orally for non-writers).

Answer keys are included.

SOME IDEAS FOR USE

  • Laminate the cards and let students use dry erase markers to X out the one that doesn’t belong.

  • Give students play-dough and let them squash a ball onto the one that doesn’t belong.

  • Use clothes pins to clip the one that doesn’t belong (You can put a dot on the back of the correct answer to make self-checking cards!).
