Math journals are one of the best ways to build problem solving skills and math reasoning! When used as part of your math workshop, journals help students learn to choose effective strategies, problem solve in multiple ways, show their thinking, and explain it to others. I use math journals with my third graders and this resource shows you how to do it in your own classroom.

This file includes:

• 5 pages of detailed instructions for setting up math journals and how to use them effectively
• Editable and pre-made table of contents for student journals
• Student self-assessment rubric
• Standards of Mathematical Practice "I Can" statements for student journals
• Printable math tools to help students with problem solving and demonstrating their thinking
• 36 journal prompts covering most third grade math standards
• Common Core alignment chart showing which standard each prompt addresses

The prompts are formatted to fit Avery 5027 or 35027 labels. This allows you to print a class set of each prompt on one page. Students can just peel and stick them right into their journals. No cutting and gluing necessary (although you can choose to print onto plain paper instead).

This pack has everything you need to start using math journals with your third graders!
