This is a set of games and activities that build phonemic awareness of word parts and syllables. Students will practice segmenting words and sorting them by the number of syllables. Great for literacy centers and small group practice!

This set includes:

  • Picture Cards (Set 1) - Includes 24 picture cards with 1, 2, 3, and 4 syllables
  • Picture Cards (Set 2) - Same as set 1 but includes words on the cards
  • 4 Sorting Mats
  • Recording Sheet
  • Worksheet
  • Answer Key

The picture cards can be used for the following activities:

SCAVENGER HUNT

Place cards (set 2) in various spots around the room. Provide students with a recording sheet and clip board. Have them go around and find cards and record the words on their sheet.

SORTING CENTER

Place either set of cards in a center with the sorting mats. Students sort the cards onto the correct mats according to how many syllables they have.

MEMORY GAME

Spread a set of cards face down on the table. Players take turns turning two cards up. If they both have the same number of syllables, the player keeps both cards. If they do not match, turn the cards back over and the next player goes. When all matches are made, the player with the most cards is the winner.

SYLLABLE WAR

Divide a set of cards between two players. Each player turns up their top card. The one with the most syllables, keeps both cards. If the syllables are the same, they put the cards back into their deck. Keep playing until someone runs out of cards. The person who ends up with the most cards is the winner.
