Being able to use various nonfiction text features is essential for understanding informational text. This is an especially important skill in the content areas of science and social studies. This set of posters, worksheets, and assessment helps students identify, understand, and use text features they encounter when reading nonfiction texts.

Text Feature Activities:

In addition to the posters, this resource also includes the following companion activities to reinforce student learning.

Nonfiction Text Features Scavenger Hunt

This is a single-page worksheet that lets students practice identifying and using text features found in a book. is best used as a practice activity during independent reading or centers. Students can look through old magazines or favorite non-fiction texts to find what text features are used and how they help the reader understand the content.

Identifying Text Features Worksheet

The is a cut and glue worksheet that tests students' understanding of text feature purposes. It can be used for practice or as an assessment piece. Students must match each text fiction to its corresponding description.

Student Reference Sheet

This is a quick, one-page guide that explains what each text feature is. It also doubles as an answer key for the cut-and-glue worksheet. Once students complete the worksheet, they can keep a copy in their reading folders to refer to as needed.

🟢 OTHER WAYS TO USE THIS RESOURCE

These versatile posters can be used in several different ways. They can be left whole and hung on a wall or bulletin board for students to refer to throughout the year. They can also be cut apart into two separate cards (example and definition). I like to mount magnets on the back of the separate pieces to create a whole group matching activity on the white board.

Instructions are also included for printing the posters as smaller hand-held cards. These can be used during your literacy centers as a matching game, for student pairing (find your text feature partner), or as mini posters that students can keep in their reading folders or interactive notebooks as a visual reference.

🔴 HOW OTHER TEACHERS HAVE USED THIS RESOURCE:

  • Jan said, "Students loved them. They took the iPods, found the images in the nonfiction materials they were using, took a picture of the specific item, put the images together and made a classroom chart. Excellent.

  • Melissa said, "I laminated these non-fiction text features posters and used them as a literacy center where students matched them. I also used them along with a Scholastic News and had students complete a Scavenger Hunt for text features. Great resource."

  • Jessica said, "These cards were perfect for teaching and practicing text features.  I printed multiple posters per page to get 4 sets of text features as "playing cards."  I left the pairs together to teach the text feature and its picture, then cut the pair apart and students used them as matching.  I love that these posters are "no frills" and straightforward."

  • Maria said, "This is one of my most used resources. Used it for remote. I snapshot the text features and added them to a google slide for my first graders so that they can incorporate them in their writing."

These are great! I cut the picture from the definition. I put the pictures up in the hall and the students had to match the definitions.
