Idioms Posters & Task Cards for Teaching Figurative Language

Teaching idioms is so fun but they can be hard for kids to comprehend - especially for those literal learners! This printable resource provides multiple ways for students to experience and understand figurative language. It will help them distinguish between the non-literal and literal meaning of different idioms and explain each one in their own words.

🔵 WHAT IS INCLUDED IN THIS RESOURCE?

Idioms Posters

There are 20 posters in this set. Each poster includes an idiom, its definition, and a picture of the literal meaning. They feature easy to read fonts and bright, eye catching illustrations. These posters can be cut apart and used as a matching activity or left whole to use on a bulletin board display or as visual aids during instruction. They are especially helpful for English language learners who often need picture support to understand new vocabulary. Posters and anchor charts are a great way to meet this need.

Each poster measures 8 x 10".

Idioms Task Cards

This resource also includes a set of task cards that let students practice using sentence-level context to understand word meaning. On each card, they will read a sentence that contains an idiom and then choose the correct meaning.

Includes

  • 16 task cards
  • recording sheet
  • answer key

The task cards are provided in two sizes:

  • quarter page (4 cards per page)
  • full page

The smaller cards are just the right size for use by individual students. They make a great addition to literacy centers or small group instruction. They can also be used to play Scoot. The full page cards are useful during whole group instruction and can be projected onto your interactive whiteboard.

These are exceptional quality. The borders are not a distraction. Pictures are clear. The words can be seen from across the room. These idiom posters are professionally done! I love them.
